The tropical Madeira Island is a destination to visit year round, with an average high of around 20ºC / 68ºF in December. During the summer months, the average highs won’t go above 26ºC / 79ºF.
A great weather, breathtaking ocean views, delicious cuisine, including two Michelin-starred restaurants – here are some of the reasons to visit Madeira.
However, with so many waterfront hotels to choose from, deciding can be difficult. For a fabulous stay, we’ve put together a list of our favorite Madeira hotels. We specifically picked hotels with balconies, so that you can enjoy the stunning ocean views.
The Cliff Bay – PortoBay
Located on a cliff on the outskirts of Funchal, the five-star Cliff Bay is one of the best Madeira hotels according to Booking.com guest reviews. Choose a room with a beautiful view of Funchal Harbour and the ocean. Indulge in a spa treatment, and enjoy the delicious breakfast with an extensive selection of fruits, and cold and hot food. If you want to dine at the two Michelin-starred Il Gallo d’Oro, make sure to book before you go.
Belmond Reid’s Palace
For a romantic celebration, we recommend Reid’s Palace. With waterfront views, and a customer service of the highest standard, the whole experience will most likely exceed your expectations. Enjoy the gardens, the spa, the three swimming pools, and good food at the Michelin-starred William Restaurant, the Dining Room or the Cipriani (Italian cuisine).
Enotel Lido Madeira – All Inclusive
We recommend Enotel Lido Madeira for an all inclusive holiday. This five-star hotel has a great location just three minutes from the beach. The hotel offers an ample choice of food, always fresh, both in the main restaurant and the specialty restaurants. It has outdoor and indoor pools, spa facilities and sauna.
Hotel Albatroz Madeira
Hotel Albatroz is located in Santa Cruz, very close to Madeira Airport (but far enough so that you won’t hear the planes) and about 20 minutes from Funchal. Nearby, the small town of Santa Cruz has a few restaurants and a supermarket. The rooms are spacious and quiet, with spectacular ocean views. The seawater swimming pools are amazing. The restaurant serves delicious food.
Pestana Promenade Ocean Resort Hotel
Pestana Promenade is another option in the Lido area, with direct access to the waterfront promenade that leads to the beach, Praia Formosa. All rooms are spacious with comfortable beds and have their private balconies. This four-star hotel also has outdoor and indoor pools, spa, and a gym. Breakfast buffet is plentiful and fresh.
Hotel Porto Mare – Porto Bay
Porto Mare is a four-star hotel set in a quiet location, away from the town centre, but easily accessible by a short walk. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday can be found on site: a beautiful botanic garden, two outdoor swimming pools with lots of sun beds, one indoor pool, three restaurants, and a spa.
