Located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf has two airports serving the metropolitan area.
Düsseldorf International Airport is the third largest in Germany, with flights to almost 200 destinations worldwide, while Weeze Airport is used almost exclusively by the low cost airline company Ryanair.
If you arrive at one of these two Düsseldorf airports, you have a few options to get to the city centre.
Düsseldorf Airport
Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is located about 15 kilometres or 9 miles northwest of the city centre.
By Train
Taking the train is the best way to reach your destination in Düsseldorf. The airport has two separate train stations: the station located underneath terminal C, which you can reach by escalators, served only by the S11 commuter train, and the airport station, sometimes called Düsseldorf Flughafen, reachable via SkyTrain from the terminal (a 7-minute journey).
It’s easier and faster to take S11 to Düsseldorf Hbf, the central station. There are around three trains per hour, and the journey between the airport and Düsseldorf Hbf takes about 12 minutes.
Düsseldorf Flughafen is the other station linking to Düsseldorf Hbf, but you have to take the SkyTrain + S-Bahn (S1) or any regional train.
The fares are the same for both stations. A single ticket costs €2.80 and is valid for 90 minutes on any onward journey using public transport (buses and trams) within Düsseldorf. You can buy the ticket at the automatic vending machines on the station platform (choose Preisstufe A option).
By Bus
There are several bus routes that serve Düsseldorf Airport. Stops are outside the main arrivals hall. Depending on your destination, you can take buses 721 (via Düsseldorf Hpf), 760, SB51, and 896.
By Taxi
A taxi ride costs about €30 to the city centre.
Weeze Airport
Weeze Airport, also known as Niederrhein Airport (NRN), is located about 80 kilometres or 50 miles northeast of central Düsseldorf.
There’s no railway station at Weeze Airport. To travel to Düsseldorf, you have to take the shuttle bus to Weeze or Kevelaer stations, located 5/10 minutes from the airport. There’s about one bus per hour, and the bus times are linked to train arrival and departure times. Then, take the regional train RE10, which runs every 30 minutes.
There are also shuttle bus services, which connect Weeze Airport and Düsseldorf Hbf. A taxi or a private transfer from Weeze Airport is expensive: expect to pay around €100.
