Germany’s Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is located about 15 kilometres / 9 miles from the city centre.
Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe, alongside London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle, and serves as a hub to Lufthansa airline.
Thanks to its location in Central Europe, and a comprehensive road and rail network, Frankfurt is a transport hub not only for people flying to other destinations around the world, but also for border cities in France (Strasbourg), the Netherlands (Maastricht) and Belgium (Antwerp).
But Frankfurt is more than a transport hub. If you’re making plans to visit any business or attraction in the city, you’ve got a few options to and from the airport.
By Train
The best way to get from Frankfurt Airport to the city centre is by train. There are two airport train stations, but you want the Regionalbahnhof located below Terminal 1 (not the long-distance Fernbahnhof station). Just follow the Bahnhof / Train Station or S-Bahn signs, and take the S8 or S9 shuttle to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (direction Hanau or Offenbach).
Trains run every 15 to 20 minutes, and the journey takes less than 15 minutes. Purchase your ticket at the automatic machines for €5 (one way). Children (14 or younger) can get a discounted fare. You will not have to swipe or show your ticket, unless asked to do so by a train official.
From the train station (Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof), you can take another transport (subway or underground known as U-Bahn, tram or bus) to reach other parts of the city.
By Bus
Bus 61 connects the airport and Frankfurt Südbahnhof, the station for long-distance train services located in the south of the city. This is your best option to get to Sachsenhausen and Schweizer Platz areas. The journey takes about 30 minutes. The ticket also costs €5, and can be purchased from the driver.
By Taxi
A taxi ride is certainly not the cheapest option but is probably the easiest and most convenient mode of transport to get to the city centre. The taxi pickup rank is located right outside the terminals. A ride to central Frankfurt will generally cost between €25-35.
