How to Get from Porto Airport to the City Centre

Porto Airport (OPO) is actually located in Maia, another city in the metropolitan area, but only 15 kilometres (9 miles) from downtown Porto.

With a capacity for 6 million passengers, and flights to more than 50 European cities, Porto Airport serves the Northern region of Portugal as well as Spain’s Galicia.

These are the best options to and from Porto Airport.

By Metro

Cheap, fast, and with a station just outside the airport, Porto’s Metro may be the right choice for you. The violet line, that runs mostly on the surface, connects the airport and Estádio do Dragão (Porto’s football club home ground), stopping at Trindade and Bolhão stations right in the city centre.

A single ticket costs €2 (Z4 – four zones) + €0.60 for the Andante Azul rechargeable card. Tickets and cards must be bought from the ticket machines or at the tourist information office.

If you’re planning several trips within 24 hours, buy the Andante 24 which costs €6.90 (Z4), or the non-rechargeable Andante Tour (€7 for 24 hours, or €15 for 72 hours), which you can use to travel as much as you want on Porto’s public transport system (except funicular and Porto Tram City Tour).

The journey between the airport and the city centre takes about 30 minutes – count 15 stops to Trindade (one more to Bolhão). Trains run every 15-30 minutes from 6am until after midnight.

By Bus

There are several local buses and shuttle services to and from the airport. Here’s information to help you decide.

STCP Lines

The public-owned bus company STCP offers three bus routes between the airport and central Porto:

  • Bus 601: Airport – Cordoaria
  • Bus 602: Airport (via Padrão de Moreira) – Cordoaria
  • Bus 604: Airport (via Crestins) – Hospital São João

You may use the Andante card (see above), or buy a ticket on board for €1.95. Buses begin running at 5h30 and finish at 0h30, with approximately a 25-minute frequency (timetables may vary slightly from summer to winter). The journey to the city centre takes about 40 minutes.

Shuttle Services

It’s usually cheaper to hop on an airport shuttle than to take a taxi. Shuttles run between the airport and Porto, and some services will take you to your hotel. Unlike regular buses, there’s luggage space.

  • Airport Shuttle offers a door-to-door transfer service starting at €6.
  • getBus runs between the airport and central Porto for €2.80, and between the airport and the cities of Braga and Guimarães for €8.
  • Goin’Porto offers several buses throughout the day between the airport and different points in the city for €5 (one way) and €9 (return).

By Taxi

A taxi ride to central Porto (for instance, Avenida dos Aliados) can take as little as 15 minutes (provided it’s not rush hour), and costs around €20.
